This Lent, St Michael Parish will be invited to collect various food items during Lent which we will ship via a container to Baker Lake, Nunavut. We hope to begin a parish twinning with St Paul Parish in Baker Lake. A few things about Baker Lake
• 46.8% of household in Nunavut are food insecure
• Canadians living in the remote north face highly elevated food prices which lead to food insecurity
• Unemployment is in excess of 25%
• While fishing and hunting are the main food stays, herd migration has made this difficult
• Cultural factors have led to further enshrinement of poverty
The parish of St Paul in Baker Lake is led by two religious sisters with a priest visiting only a few times a year. The Sisters have begun cooking classes, prayer corners for mothers, after school programs and a community lunch after Sunday Liturgy.
We look forward in Lent 2020 to help Once Again!
